Episode 05 (7/10 – Above Average)
Impression:
The magical girl element is being expanded, so I’d like to take this moment to explain why Kannagi’s mahou shoujo works and Fresh Pretty Cure’s doesn’t. 1) The few traditional mahout shoujo aspects of Kannagi are used in parody. Fresh Pretty Cure is ripping off the traditional characteristics. 2) Kannagi is doing its own thing. Nagi’s split personality, her responsibility as a shrine maiden, and how she imitates the magical girl show she saw on TV are the points of its originality. In this episode we find out why Zange is dressed as a sister; Hakou’s father is a priest. So, I’m more forgiving towards the writers than I was – but not much more. This was funny episode; I really like the social satire and the portrayal of idol fans.
Suggestive Content:
Nagi and Zange get more power when they have more worshippers. Zange tries to work her charms on Jin, which shocks the other two girls.
Rating:
Animation: 7/10
Characters: 8/10
Writing: 8/10
Pacing: 7/10
Enjoyment: 8/10
